
Stuart’s European law practice centres on EU competition law. His practice covers the free movement of goods, services and capital. He has extensive experience in common agricultural policy matters and EU external relations.
He has appeared in over 20 cases in the European Court of Justice and Court of First Instance in Luxembourg, as well as many cases in the English domestic courts involving European law issues. His landmark cases include those relating to the issue of Sunday trading, the ban on the export of British beef following the BSE crisis some years ago and the imposition of sanctions on Serbia.
He has access to an experienced team of competition law economists and other experts.
Amongst other publications in the EU law field, he is the co-author of The EC Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings (OUP, 2nd edition, 2008), EC Banking Law (Lloyd’s Press, 2nd edition, 1994), and Banking and the Competition Law of the EEC. He was a member of the Bank of England’s Financial Markets Law Committee Working Group on various issues relating to financial collateral arrangements.
